Bed Sheets Size Guide

Ever try to put the wrong size sheet set on a mattress? There are some guidelines that will help you get the perfect fit every time. All you need is a few basic sizing principles.

The length and width are the most obvious measurements that you will need when you purchase that perfect “sleepwear” for your bed. Do you need a Queen sheet set or a King sheet set? Maybe all need is a twin sheet set, but did you know that not all twin sheet sets are alike? There is also a twin xl sheet set. In the end, it isn’t as daunting as it sounds as long as you have a good measuring tape. Now that you have the length and width, there is another measurement you won’t want to overlook and that is the sheet pocket size. To get the pocket size you will need to measure the height of your mattress. Starting at the top of the box spring and measure to the top of the mattress. There you have it—three basic measurements and you’re ready to go.

King Sheet Set
A standard king-size mattress is 78 x 80 inches (198 x 203 cm). The pocket size on a standard king set is 13 inches or less. Some king sheet sets have deeper pockets—up to 16 inches. In this case you will need a king sheet set specifying deep pockets. Some need an even deeper pocket—measuring from 17-22 inches.

Queen Sheet Set
A standard Queen-size mattress is 60 x 80 inches (153 x 203 cm). A pocket size of 13 inches will accept a standard queen sheet set. A 14 to 16 inch pocket needs the deep pocket, and a mattress that has pockets of 17 inches or more would mean choosing a queen sheet set that is extra deep.

Full Sheet Set
A full-sized mattress standard size is 54 x 76 inch (137 x 193 cm). However, pay close attention to the type of padding on your mattress. If you choose a pillow top it will increase the pocket size. In general, a full sheet set is available in a number of pocket sizes, so pay close attention to your specific pocket size needs when purchasing your full sheet set.

Twin Sheet Set
A standard twin-size mattress is 39 x 76 inches (99 x 193 cm). The twin also comes in an extra-large twin which measures approximately 39 x 80 inches (99 x 203 cm)and needs a twin xl sheet set. Because the twin xl sheet set has extra length and possible variation in pocket depth, so it requires a different size sheet set than it slightly short standard twin.

Remember to get accurate measurements for the width and length of your mattress. Then don’t forget to measure the depth of your pockets. Congratulations! You’re on your way to a good night’s sleep.
